The "third" autograph manuscript of L'Infinito by Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837) is a FAKE !

For several weeks, Italian newspapers, radio stations as well as national and local TV channels have announced the discovery of a third original autograph manuscript of the famous Leopardian poem, L'Infinito, and its sale on auction in Rome.

From the first instance, by photographic comparison, then by direct examination of the exhibit in Rome, the Geneva-based Italian palaeographer Renato SAGGIORI (also known for having contributed in the past to revealing the false dairies of Hitler and later those of Mussolini) immediately recognised that the document in question is a false copy, and informed the auction house in Rome in-charge of selling the document at a starting price of EUR 150'000. The counterfeit manuscript was supported by a historic and literary pseudo reconstruction produced by an academic from the University of Macerata, together with a certificate of authenticity signed by the team of a former Neapolitan curator of Leopardi manuscripts.

The fake manuscript was withdrawn yesterday afternoon, which is a first positive sign, on the very same day it was supposed to be auctioned. The reason announced was negotiations of a direct sale to the Region of Marches.

Renato Saggiori maintains his firm conviction that the manuscript attributed to Leopardi is a false copy, fabricated to cheat collectors as well as some specialists, as the document was intentionally and recently printed on old paper (prior to 1860) acquited from archives of a public administration centre. The expert palaeographer deemed necessary to intervene publicly to reveal the truth, and to prevent the spending of public funds, especially in difficult times for Italy, who would otherwise be gratifying and paying the counterfeiter for this literary "farce".

Il"Terzo manoscritto autografo de “L'Infinito” di Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837) è un FALSO !

Da settimane in Italia su giornali, radio e TV locali e nazionali si è fatta "notizia" con l'annuncio della scoperta d'un terzo esemplare autografo del celeberrimo poema leopardiano "L'Infinito" e della sua messa in vendita all'asta.

Fin dal primo momento, sulla base di fotografie e poi d'un esame diretto a Roma dell'oggetto - malgrado una dettagliata pseudo-ricostruzione storico-letteraria del documento, redatta da una cattedratica maceratese, accompagnata da una certificazione d'autenticità sottoscritta dall’équipe d'un ex-conservatore napoletano dei manoscritti del Leopardi - l'esperto paleografo italo-ginevrino Renato SAGGIORI ( noto tra l'altro nel passato per aver contribuito a smascherare i falsi Diari di Hitler e poi quelli di Mussolini) aveva subito riconosciuto la non autenticità del documento in questione e ne aveva informato la Casa d'Aste romana, incaricata di venderlo partendo da una base di 150.000 Euro.

Ieri pomeriggio, giorno dell'attesa vendita, primo positivo risultato: il lotto è stato ritirato adducendo, come motivazione, una presunta trattativa in corso per la cessione del manoscritto (FALSO) alla Regione Marche ! L'esperto Saggiori, confermando oggi ancora la sua ferma convinzione sulla totale falsità del documento attribuito al Leopardi - artefatto nato per imbrogliare collezionisti e, purtroppo, qualche studioso, perchè intenzionalmente eseguito in tempi recenti su un supporto cartaceo abbastanza d'epoca (ante 1860)k e proveniente dall' Archivio d'una Pubblica Amministrazione - ha creduto opportuno intervenire e darne pubblica informazione affinchè non solo la verità sia definitivamente ristabilita, ma anche e soprattutto affinchè il denaro pubblico non sia sprecato, in tempi così difficili per tutti, per premiare e pagare profumatamente un falsario, autore di questa "beffa" letteraria.

Le « troisième » manuscrit autographe de L’Infinito de Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837) est un FAUX !

Depuis plusieurs semaines, des journaux italiens, la radio et certaines télévisions locales et nationales ont annoncé la découverte d’un troisième exemplaire autographe du très célèbre poème léopardien L’Infinito, et sa mise en vente aux enchères à Rome.

Dès le premier moment, sur la base de photographies, puis d’un examen direct à Rome de l’objet – malgré une pseudo reconstruction historico littéraire rédigée par une universitaire de Macerata, accompagnée d’une attestation d’authenticité émanant de l’équipe d’un ex-conservateur napolitain des manuscrits de Leopardi – l’expert paléographe italo-genevois Renato SAGGIORI (connu entre autres pour avoir contribué dans le passé à démasquer les faux carnets d’Hitler, puis ceux de Mussolini) avait immédiatement reconnu la non authenticité du manuscrit en question et en avait informé la Maison de ventes aux enchères romaine chargée de vendre l’objet au prix de base de 150.000 Euro.

Hier après-midi, jour de la vente tant attendue, premier point positif : le manuscrit a été retiré de la vente car faisant l’objet d’une négociation avec la Région des Marches pour parvenir à une cession directe.

Renato SAGGIORI réitère aujourd’hui encore sa ferme conviction que ce manuscrit attribué à Leopardi est un faux, fait de toute évidence pour tromper les collectionneurs – mais aussi, hélas, quelques spécialistes – car intentionnellement et récemment exécuté sur un support papier ancien (avant 1860) et provenant des Archives d’une Administration publique. C’est pourquoi l’expert paléographe croit opportun d’intervenir publiquement afin que la vérité soit définitivement rétablie, mais aussi pour empêcher qu’on ne gaspille l’argent public – surtout en ces temps difficiles que vit l’Italie - en gratifiant et payant grassement un faussaire, auteur de cette « farce » littéraire.
